Utica (WSYR-TV) – An Oneida County man died early Monday morning after he was pinned underneath a garbage truck at a landfill in the city of Utica.

Utica Police responded to the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority on Leland Avenue shortly after midnight.

When police arrived, they found 28-year-old William Pope of Blossvale pinned underneath vehicle.

They were able to free the man, who was working for Bliss Environmental Services in Rome, but he succumbed to his injuries after being transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital.

Police believe Pope was emptying the truck when he realized he had left it in gear. When he tried to get back into the vehicle, he fell and it overran him.
