Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – An Onondaga County Legislator says the county will soon demand that New York repeal the historic gun laws that were put in place in the wake of the
Sandy Hook massacre.
A joint news conference was held Friday morning between the legislature and the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office.
The Pistol Licensing Unit says it has been overwhelmed with opt-out forms, which enable gun owners to keep their personal information private.
The office says it has received hundreds of the forms this week.
Some county officials are encouraging all gun owners to fill the form out, saying no information should be public.
“I don't see any justification for why law abiding citizens' names and addresses should be publicly listed on who has a gun or who doesn't have a gun,” said Onondaga County Legislator Kevin Holmquist.
County lawmakers plan to vote on the repeal resolution at the next meeting in March.
Oswego County also recently passed a resolution opposing the new gun laws in New York, which was symbolic in nature only.
