SYRACUSE (WSYR-TV) Thousands cheered on the soldiers of past and present wars Saturday during the Annual Veteran’s Day Parade in Syracuse.

Carlton Derby was in the crowd. He said the steady beat of the drum ignites a certain pride within him.

“I have a very strong sense of patriotism and I honor those who serve and especially those who didn't come back,” said Derby

Derby shares that pride and patriotism not only with the fellow brothers and sisters who wore the emblems and crests that define who each of them are, but also with those who waved and carried the flag proudly during the parade.

Tony Tarzie was one of those who are proud to be an Air Force Veteran, “I'm here to support the troops who are now in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

But for many at the parade, the recent incident at Fort Hood was not a distant thought. They remember their brethren killed not by bullets from an enemy, but by the anguish of a fellow soldier.

“Everybody's heart goes out to the people who were impacted adversely by the shooting down there. That's something you never really anticipate,” said David Quilter, a Marine Corps Veteran.
