Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – A Syracuse man was arrested after a Thursday bank robbery when police say they found him covered in red dye from a dye pack that had been given to him at the bank.
Police say they responded to a bank robbery at a Chase Bank at 801 James St. that had been robbed shortly after 9:50 a.m.
According to police, Equawan Williams, 36, of Syracuse, had handed a teller a threatening note, demanding money. They say he even filled out bank slips with his name on them and left them on the bank counter before taking off with the cash.
Witnesses told police that they saw a person run across the street from the bank and into the Skyline Apartments.
While they searched the area, one officer spotted a taxi cab waiting in the 500 block of Catherine Street. Police discovered a man who fit the description of the robbery suspect in the car.
When they surrounded the car, they discovered Williams, who was covered with the dye. They say they took him into custody without incident.
They also say they discovered crack cocaine on him.
Police charged Williams with third degree robbery and criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree.
He was scheduled to be arraigned in Syracuse City Court on Friday at 9 a.m.
