GALEN, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a central New York man has been charged with attempting to set his estranged wife's car on fire after she had locked herself inside during a domestic dispute.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office says 50-year-old John Thoms Jr. was arrested Tuesday night after the incident at Debora Thoms' home in Galen, midway between Rochester and Syracuse.

Deputies say Thoms hit the woman several times before she got into her vehicle and locked the doors. Authorities say he then attempted to set the vehicle on fire after dousing it with gasoline.

He was charged with attempted second-degree murder, attempted arson and criminal mischief.

John Thoms was being held in the county jail without bail.

It couldn't be immediately determined if he had a lawyer.
