KIRKLAND, N.Y. (AP) - State police say one person is dead and another hospitalized in critical condition after a car hit two pedestrians in Oneida County.

The accident happened shortly before noon on Sunday in the town of Kirkland. Troopers say a 2012 Nissan Versa driven by 74-year-old Edward Gibbons of Utica was heading south on Route 12B when it swerved onto the shoulder and hit two people who were walking there.

Both victims were taken to St Elizabeth's Hospital in Utica by ambulance. Police say 55-year-old Mark Knapp of Utica was pronounced dead and 70-year-old Beverly Clarey of Clinton was airlifted to Upstate Hospital in critical condition.

The State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the accident.
