BRIGHTON, N.Y. (AP) - A 12-year-old suburban Rochester boy has died after being hit in the chest by a lacrosse ball last week.

Officials at Strong Memorial Hospital tell Rochester media outlets that Tyler Kopp of Brighton died Tuesday at the hospital.

Authorities say the boy was playing at Total Sports Experience in Gates Thursday night when he was hit by the hard rubber ball, causing his heart to stop.

An off-duty Rochester firefighter performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until an ambulance crew arrived.

Tyler was a seventh-grader at Twelve Corners Middle School in Brighton.
