Cicero (WSYR-TV) - As technology advances, scam artists are finding new ways to swindle money from innocent people. As a Cicero woman can attest, a troubling text is showing up on mobile phones in the Central New York area and plays on your emotions.
“It said one of my family members had been in an accident and to give that person a call at that number and it was an out of state number,” explained Angelica Tomasino.
According to authorities, the number provided in the text message is registered to a man in Ohio, but originates from Puerto Rico.
The message has bad grammar and poor wording, all the tell tale signs of a scam.
“It was my first red flag, but also if a family member was injured, I didn't think I would receive a text message regarding an injury and it said ‘call me’ twice in the beginning and at the end,” Tomasino said.
Syracuse Police say they would never send a text message to notify someone about an accident, and advise resisting the temptation to find out who's on the other end.
You should not respond to the text message, but simply just delete it.
