On the weather map this midday we are watching high pressure over the Adirondacks loosening its grip on central New York. Meanwhile, low pressure will well to our south over North Carolina but moisture from this system is streaming as far north as New York state. Expect more clouds than sun this afternoon, particularly south of Syracuse. There may be some light snow showers along the New York/Pennsylvania border later this afternoon. Highs will be seasonable in the mid 30s.
With the storm system heading out to sea tonight, high pressure will build back into the region tomorrow and into Friday. Mostly sunny skies and a warm up are in store with highs climbing near 40 as we reach the end of the work week.
A big change is expected later on Friday as a cold front approaches the region in the afternoon hours. Expect widespread snow showers associated with the frontal passage come Friday night and drastically colder air for the weekend.. Highs will be only in the 20s Saturday and Sunday.
Our computer models show some uncertainty when the coldest air will arrive, some point more towards Saturday others say Sunday. Right now we are going with Saturday as the coldest day. Some lake-effect snow showers are possible once the front passes this weekend, but it is still too far out to pinpoint the location and amount. Temperatures look to increase to more seasonable levels for the start of the work week.
