Showers arrive this evening
Low pressure will continue to track from the Ohio Valley this evening to a position over the west end of Lake Ontario by tomorrow. Strengthening south-southeast winds ahead of this low will bring increasing moisture into central New York for tonight and tomorrow.
Showers will move in this evening and continue through the night. By later tonight there could even be some thunder. The wet weather is expected to last into tomorrow. Low pressure will track into Canada and drag a cold front through the region. Along with the showers and any thunderstorms there could be some heavy downpours.
The front moves through central New York by later tomorrow or tomorrow evening. Although the atmosphere will start to dry out we are going to keep showers in the forecast for a couple of days beyond tomorrow. Here is what’s happening. Although low pressure down at the ground will move away from us quickly, low pressure up at the jet stream level will lag behind. This represents a pool of cooler air aloft that will take until Thursday night to move to our east. Until that happens we are going to keep showers in the forecast. However, they will be more scattered in nature than tomorrow.
Starting Friday, high pressure will begin to build into central New York and our weather should begin to improve as we start to see more sunshine and our temperatures start to moderate.
Our next weather maker is a cold front that will approach central New York for Sunday (Mother’s Day). That will give us the threat for some showers to end the weekend.
