CAMILLUS, NY (WSYR-TV) - The 1st Annual St. Paw-Tricks pet parade was held on Saturday in Camillus.

The goal of the parade is to raise awareness of local animal rescues and the countless pets they care for.

Organizers said that dogs and cats in shelters should be considered first when people think about getting a new pet.

"Adoption should be your first option. Please don't buy from a breeder. Please don't buy from a pet store. Most pet store dogs are puppy mill dogs and rescue is your best choice,” said Kimberly Smith, a volunteer with Recycle-A-Bull Bully Breed Rescue.

The St. Paw-Tricks pet parade also raised money for the numerous local shelters that put the event together.

Organizers said if you don't have the money to donate and can't adopt, you can always offer to foster a cat or dog temporarily, while its respective rescue finds it a permanent home.
