Tompkins County (WSYR-TV) -- A strong thunderstorm brought heavy winds, lots of lightning and hail to Tompkins County just before 8 p.m. Thursday.

Emergency dispatchers say the storm knocked down trees and power lines across the county.

According to NYSEG, hundreds of customers lost power due to the storm. City police say the power outages also affected several traffic signals in the downtown and East Hill areas of the city.

Police say traffic was backed up on several downtown streets, due to the outages.

Initial reports from the National Weather Service say the hail ranged in size from pennies to baseballs.
