BREWERTON, NY (WSYR-TV) - There are a few things to remember before you take the boat out onto the water for the first time this season.

The Brewerton Fire Department's Water Rescue Foreman said you should check it over thoroughly. Make sure you have life jackets, flares and that the boat is in running condition.

"So many times this time of year we get calls from boats in distress. They didn't charge their battery before they put it in the boat. They didn't fill up the fuel tank. They're running old fuel and they just break down and we have to go out and pull them back in,” said Don Devaul.

Devaul also urges boaters to drink responsibly and says the Sheriff's Office will be out patrolling the waters this Memorial Day weekend.
