PITCHER, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say police shot and wounded a 41-year-old man when he opened fire on officers responding to a minor accident in a rural Chenango County town.

Chenango County Sheriff Ernest Cutting says Patrick Ford Jr. fired about a dozen rounds at two deputies and a state trooper who arrived at a town of Pitcher home where his pickup truck had become stuck on a utility pole guy wire Thursday evening. Cutting says Ford's 9-year-old son was with him.

A deputy got the son to safety, and when Ford refused the other deputy's orders to drop his weapon, he was shot in the upper torso.

Ford was taken to a Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse. Cutting says he's expected to recover.

He says Ford had threatened people in the house before police arrived.
