Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – An image circulating on social media indicates that if you’re held up at an ATM, police will respond if you enter your PIN number in reverse.

The viral rumor is false, however.

The Federal Trade Commission actually conducted a study of emergency technology for use with ATMs a few years ago and found that banks have never had any emergency PIN system in place.

Moreover, they say such technology could actually put the customer at risk and the cost of such a system would be substantial.
