Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – A home on Syracuse’s West Side was heavily damage during a fire that began around midnight.

All of the residents in the two-family home on Avery Avenue were safe after the incident early Monday morning.

Deputy Fire Chief Steve Cavuto said that renovations in the home made it easier for the fire to spread and harder to fight. He noted, however, that most of the damage was confined to the building’s exterior.

“We were able to save much of the interior. We were able to stop most of the fire before it progressed in, so the family didn't lose a lot of their possessions and most of the damage you're seeing is on the outside of the building,” Cavuto said.

In the morning, fire officials were still investigating the incident.
