Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Is Jim Boeheim retiring at the end of this season? A Tweet by Syracuse University led some to believe he just might be.
It turns out that Tweet was a mistake. Still, it spread quickly, raising concern and questions throughout Orange Nation.
Local blogger and OCC Sophomore Mike Ortiz’s article set the story in motion after Wednesday night’s game against DePaul.
He wrote an article that claimed: "A source close to DYST now is reporting that Syracuse director of Athletics, Dr. Daryl Gross is expected to meet with the NCAA about possible NCAA violations from last year's team. Syracuse head coach, Jim Boeheim as a result has also been asked to retire."
And here’s where it gets interesting. After SU beat DePaul last night at the Dome, SU’s official Twitter account tweeted a link to Ortiz’s story, adding: "Did I just watch Jim Boeheim's last game in the Carrier Dome? One source says yes."
The tweet was eventually deleted, but it was up long enough to get people talking, further fueling speculation on Boeheim’s future.
A few hours later, SU posted an official statement on its Twitter page: “Earlier tonight a tweet was mistakenly sent. Nothing in the tweet was true or accurate and we apologize for the confusion."
On Thursday, the school told us its Twitter account is managed by full-time staff and student interns.
In a statement they said: “We are reviewing what occurred and assessing our protocols to ensure that something like this doesn’t happen again.”
