Newfield (WSYR-TV) -- A Tompkins County woman is accused of starving one dog to death and surrendering a second to the SPCA in an emaciated state.

The SPCA of Tompkins County has charged Christina Carpenter, of Nob Hill Road in Newfield, with two counts of failure to provide proper sustenance.

Carpenter was arraigned in Newfield Town Court in December and is scheduled to be back in court on January 12.

SPCA officials say the surviving dog required extensive veterinary care. She’s currently recovering in foster care and is not available for adoption at this time.

The SPCA of Tompkins County responded to 1,500 reports regarding animal cruelty and neglect in 2011, resulting in 398 investigations. Over 100 animals were seized as a result.
