Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Upstate University Hospital officials kicked off their Donate Life Month campaign with a special ceremony on Wednesday urging the public to consider joining the organ-donor registry.
They say there is a critical shortage of organ donors and some individuals in need of a kidney transplant may have to wait more than four years for a new organ.
“Anyone can decide to become a donor. Medical history or age does not automatically exclude a person from donation. There is no cost to donate,” Upstate University Hospital Chief Operating Officer Paul Seale.
New York is currently ranked at the bottom of the list of states whose residents are enrolled.
Anyone who is interested in becoming a donor should visit the state health department’s website
