2 dogs fatally shot, left on railroad tracks in Oneida County
WHITESTOWN, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities are investigating the killing of two dogs that were shot and left on railroad tracks in Oneida County so they would get hit by a train.
Police in Whitestown, outside Utica, tell local media outlets that CSX railroad employees reported last Wednesday that two dead dogs had been left on the tracks after being shot. Officials say one of the dogs was also hit by a train.
Police say they believe the pit bull-shepherd mixes were shot early on the morning of Feb. 20.
The dogs' owner was identified and contacted Tuesday after police matched the dogs' descriptions to a lost pet posting on a local website. Police say they belonged to a Utica man who said the dogs got loose on Feb. 18.
