Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Election Day was the day that 25 people choose to become US Citizens in Syracuse. A naturalization ceremony took place Tuesday morning at the Federal Building downtown.

The new citizens come from all walks of life, and from places far away, including the Ivory Coast, Egypt, Somalia, and the Sudan. But now, they share one thing in common:  they're all United States citizens.

The ceremony is the culmination of a nine-step process that ends with a certificate signifying citizenship.

Patricia Loomis says becoming a citizen is important to her. "I’m teaching my son about this great country, to be a part of it, to take part in Thanksgiving, Independence Day, as a citizen.ā€

Members of the spirit of Syracuse chorus provided the vocal backdrop for Tuesday's ceremonies.

Every year, more than 700,000 people from other countries become U.S. citizens.
