30 horses killed in tractor-trailer fire on I-81, south of Cortland County
Lisle, NY (WSYR-TV) – 30 horses being transported on I-81 Monday evening were killed when the tractor-trailer carrying them caught fire.
State Police say the fire started just before 8 p.m. in the northbound lanes of the highway in the town of Lisle, just south of the Cortland County line.
The 56-year-old driver saw the flames, pulled over, but wasn’t able to put out the fire.
The Marathon Fire Department arrived and was able to extinguish the fire.
The 30 horses were being transported from Shippensburg, Pennsylvania to a rendering plant in Massueville, Quebec.
State Police say the preliminary investigation shows the fire started after a passenger side fuel tank malfunctioned.
