SYRACUSE, NY (WSYR-TV) - The Rosamond Gifford Zoo hosted Fiesta de las Aves on Saturday. It is a special event to celebrate migratory birds and Latin American Culture.

Formerly held in May, the event was moved to October in honor of Hispanic heritage Month.

There were animal demonstrations, bird shows, cultural performances, puppet shows and activity stations in both English and Spanish.

So why does the zoo celebrate birds from Latin America? Some of them have a connection with upstate New York.

"There's birds that spend their summer’s up here and their winter’s down in Latin America and there’s sort of a common thread between North America cultures, including Central New York and cultures in Central and South America.” said Zoo Director of Education Nathan Keefe.

The event was presented in conjunction with the Spanish action League of Onondaga County.
