Accused baby killer's trial set
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV/AP) - Jury selection has begun in the trial of a Syracuse man charged in the fatal shooting of a toddler caught in the crossfire of what authorities say was gang-related gunfire.
Prosecutors say 22-year-old Saquan Evans was aiming for Rashaad Walker Jr.'s father when he opened fire on a minivan in which the 20-month-old boy was riding in November 2010. One of the bullets struck the toddler in the head, killing him.
Evans was charged with second-degree murder. Jury selection began Monday in Onondaga County Court. Testimony is scheduled to begin Wednesday.
The trial was scheduled for last June, but was delayed after Walker and other alleged gang members were indicted on federal racketeering charges.
Police say Evans was trying to shoot Rashaad Walker Sr. in retaliation for the shooting of former Henninger High School athlete Kihary Blue.
