Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Amber alert notifications will now be sent to your cell phone for free. New York officials launched the new system on Thursday.
State law enforcement agencies, along with various government agencies made the announcement at State Police Troop Headquarters G in Albany.
The emergency notices are activated in the most serious child abduction cases. The Amber Alert system has been used statewide since 2002.
The system will have a much larger reach than the previous system, officials said. That’s because it’s now part of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System
The system will send messages to any phone with emergency alert-capable phones in any area where an alert has been issued.
