Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- A group of amputees from Central New York met with a man from California Wednesday to share their experiences and draw strength from each other.
The group -- although strangers -- share a deep bond, brought together by unfortunate circumstances. Cameron Clapp, also known as a medical miracle, is the source of their strength.
Clapp’s touching story is impacting and inspiring people around the world.
Amputee Andrew O’Brien said, “It’s actually pretty inspiring because he’s lost three [limbs] and I’ve only lost one, so to see him do a lot means that I can too.”
Clapp’s story isn’t like most. Just four days after 9/11, his life changed forever when he was hit by a freight train.
“I was drinking; I was drowsy and a train came and I didn’t hear it and it hit me and cut both of my legs off above the kness and my right arm close to the shoulder,” Clapp said.
Clapp says his life as a rebellious teen led him in a downward spiral that caused him to lose three major limbs. Ever since that day, he uses the only arm he has left to essentially put his body together.
“I have two robot legs and a claw and they help me everyday do anything I need to do. They’re the tools that help me live my life,” Clapp said.
Clapp’s life has transformed into an inspiring journey that helps people not only in Central New York, but around the globe.
Clapp says his message is pretty simple: Life is about setting goals, making the right decisions and most importantly, never giving up.
