(ABC News / WSYR-TV) - Actress Angelina Jolie revealed in a New York Times Op-Ed Tuesday morning that she has undergone a double mastectomy after discovering she had a very high risk of developing breast cancer.
Jolie said her difficult battle over this decision started in February. She wrote in the Times, “My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer.”
“Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could,” Jolie wrote.
Cancer took her mother’s life at 56.
Jolie underwent the medical procedures starting in February and completing the process on April 27 with her partner Brad Pitt by her side, calling him loving and supportive and a very important part of the transition.Click here to read Angelina Jolie’s full article.
