It seems like we are just getting one wet weather maker out of central New York just in time to focus on more rain for the weekend. I just had a photographer here at the station come up to me and tell me it feels a little like a rain forest. So far this month Syracuse is about 2 inches above normal in rainfall and through Thursday we’ve already had 8 days with measurable rain but believe it or not we are faring better than some other Northeast cities:
| June Days With Rain | June Rain |
| Hartford, CT | 10 | 5.00” |
| New York, NY | 13 | 7.62” |
| Philadelphia, PA | 13 | 4.05” |
Now on to the weekend. The consensus from our computer models is that an area of low pressure will track to the south of Syracuse Saturday. That will put us in another area of rain during the day. The rain could come down hard at times during the afternoon. It looks like another 1 to 2 inches could fall by early Saturday evening. As of Friday morning there are no watches up over central New York for flooding but the rain Saturday bears watching since in Syracuse we’ve seen more than 3” of rain in the last week.
The good news for Sunday is there won’t be as much rain around as Saturday. It will be more showery in nature. We are still going to hold out for some sun late in the day. From a practical standpoint, though, that late day sun may not matter much if you have outdoor activities. With all the rain preceding Sunday afternoon, it will still be damp and it may still be tough to get outdoor activities in.
Now a real glimmer of hope. About a week and a half ago we talked about a ridge of high pressure building close somewhere in the East around Father’s Day. It looks like that looks like will take early next week, just after Father’s Day. It is actually part of a blocked pattern at the jet stream level that will feature that ridge but also an area of low pressure just off the East Coast. That low is actually the same system that moves through central New York Saturday and Sunday. While the big cities of the Northeast will continue to have a threat of showers even into early next week, we will enjoy drier weather along with a return of sunshine and eventually above normal temperatures. We could have our first extended period of 80 degree weather since the end of April.
