Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - A rare and unexpected apology came Friday from Apple, Inc’s leading man.
CEO Tim Cook is acknowledging that the new Apple maps app, which was supposed to be the company's own version of Google maps, got off on the wrong track.
The app rolled out last week to millions and the complaints are pouring in.
For true apple fans like David Rosen the multi-billion dollar tech empire can do no wrong… that is until he downloaded iOS 6 to get the much-anticipated Apple maps.
“Its definitely disappointing, Apple has held themselves to everything they come out with as perfect and that it will work beautifully and as they admitted in a press release they fell short on this one,” Rosen said.
He expected precise directions from the new app, but instead the Brooklyn Bridge looks like it's been hit by an earthquake. Popular landmarks don't even show up and entire neighborhoods are missing.
NewsChannel 9 decided to put the software to the test. We typed in Onondaga Lake Park on a phone with the old software and it took us right there. Then we typed it in on a phone that has the new software and it took us to downtown Syracuse on Salina Street.
At Syracuse University’s iSchool, communications director J.D. Ross is hearing mixed reviews.
“Most of the comments from the people I know have been positive about some aspects but are overwhelmingly brought down by the fact that the maps has been such a terrible release,” Ross said.
Apple engineers say they are working around the clock to solve the issues. But in the meantime they urge people to use Mapquest, Bing, and even Google, their competitor.
