Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Two mystery shopper websites have been shut down, according to the State Attorney General’s Office.
Attorney General Eric Schneiderman shut down the websites www.idealcorp.net and www.survsonl.com, operating as T. Crefideal Corp, who he says lured consumers into becoming mystery shoppers to gather information anonymously about the customer service of a particular store, but instead of getting paid, they were duped into paying the scammers thousands of dollars.
Victims were sent a counterfeit check for $2,000 and were told to keep $300 as payment, the Attorney General’s Office says. The victim was then instructed to wire the remaining money to someone overseas and to evaluate Western Union employees during the process.
Once the victims’ banks realized the checks were counterfeit, they’d held the victims accountable to pay back the money.
The Attorney General says this should serve as a warning for any future work-at-home opportunities you may consider.
Be suspicious of checks that come to you unsolicited, promises of easy money are almost always a scam. There is virtually no legitimate reason for anyone to ever give you a check or money order and in turn have you transfer the funds back to them.
