Auburn (WSYR-TV) -- A corrections officer is recovering in the hospital after being violently assaulted by an inmate at the Auburn Correctional Facility Thursday.

The New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association (NYSCOPBA) says inmate Robert Hayes was being interviewed when he lunged out of his chair and threw the officer against a table and then to the ground.

Hayes attacked the officer’s face, scratching his eye and eyelid, which required five stitches. The officer also sustained two broken ribs, a punctured lung and a swollen knee, according to the NYSCOPBA.

State Police will likely press charges against Hayes for the assault and for having a weapon in his cell, which was discovered after the incident.
