Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – A Weedsport infant who suffers from an unusual and painful skin condition has returned to the hospital.

According to a post on the Facebook page dedicated to the child, baby Easton Friedel was having trouble breathing and his heart rate declined over night, prompting the family to return him to Upstate University Hospital.

The trip was the child’s second since returning from specialized care at a Cincinnati children’s hospital.

Baby Easton suffers from Epidermolysis Bullosa. Children who suffer from it are often called “butterfly babies,” as the condition leaves their skin as fragile as the tissue of butterflies’ wings.

The Central New York community rallied around the child from Weedsport and raised tens of thousands of dollars to help him.

Doctors told Easton’s family that most babies with EB die from infection before their first birthday.
