It's been a while. I think my last blog was about a month ago and I was still talking about summer. How things have changed since that blog. Just so you all know, part of the time I was on vacation. A big thank you to Tom Hauf for filling in. He is a true pro. We've gotten a lot of e-mails from folks thanking us for adding him to the weather staff. Then last week not only was I spinning up with the weather after those two weeks but I was also spinning up with the new graphic system. As Dave Longley has mentioned in a previous blog it has a lot of neat features but it is brand new which requires a lot of concentration those first few days. It's certainly kept me on my toes. Plus we are building a lot of new graphic products from scratch which is taking up a lot of off air time when we might normally be blogging. I'm guessing when we all get in more of a routine in the next few weeks there will be more blogs. Now on to a few observations.
Like I said, we certainly changed weather regimes in just the last week. Our summer may have arrived late but it lingered quite a bit. The average high temperature in September through the first 24 days was
74 degrees. The relatively mild weather may have actually hurt some of the Fall businesses locally. I was out at Tim's Pumpkin Patch on Route 20 yesterday and they told me that in the middle of September during a mild weekend their numbers were down. My theory is if it still feels even a bit like summer in September people around here are going to do summer things. They aren't thinking about pumpkins or apples just yet. However, a cold front came through September 25th and we've been cool ever since. The average high temperature since then is only
59 degrees! There always seems to be some abrupt change like that in our weather come late September or early October. It is never a gentle slide into true fall weather.
It looks like our temperatures will moderate the next few days. In fact, we may hit 70 Saturday if we can get enough sun out in the afternoon. For the early part of the week our temperatures will be closer to normal but a system moving through Tuesday and Wednesday will probably bring some cooler weather in for the end of the week.
