Bicyclist struck, killed on Syracuse-area road
SALINA, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a 19-year-old man has died after he was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle on a suburban Syracuse road.
Onondaga County sheriff's deputies tell local media outlets that Frederick Merchant of Clay was riding his bike on the shoulder of the road around 8:30 p.m. Sunday when he suddenly turned into the path of a sport utility vehicle.
Deputies say Merchant was taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse and later pronounced dead.
Police say the SUV was driven by a 49-year-old man from Liverpool.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
