Pompey, New York (WSYR-TV) - John Gorke was killed cycling along Route 20 in Pompey when a car hit him Friday morning. Now the 47-year-old state trooper's death has some local bicyclists thinking twice about safety.
"I was hit by a car when I was 16-years-old, so I just stay off the main roads", said bicyclist, Ralph Rigo.
Since his accident, Rigo only walks and bicycles along park trails. He said Friday's deadly crash on Route 20 in Pompey, that claimed the life of John Gorke, only made his feelings stronger about staying off of bikes on main roads.
"Cars are bigger than we are, if they hit us, were vulnerable. I just feel safer in the parks."
Some bicyclists who ride along Route 20 said even though the accident is still fresh in their minds, they still feel relatively safe on the road.
"Give drivers as much room as I can, but at the same time, they have to give us some room as well," said bicyclist, Kevin McGarry. He says staying safe on the road simply comes down to paying attention.
"Be aware, be alert and just give people some space."
State police are still investigating Friday's accident and it is not yet clear whether the car's driver, 20-year-old Charles Brewer, will face any charges.
