New York (WSYR-TV) -- A nationwide ban on synthetic drugs may be just days away. This afternoon, the Senate approved a bill that would make the dangerous and deadly compounds in synthetic marijuana and bath salts illegal and remove them from store shelves across the United States.

Until recently, the synthetic drugs were sold legally in stores across Central New York, but in March, the State Health Department changed that. The problem? Drug makers came up with new variations not covered in the ban.

Senator Chuck Schumer says forbidding the drugs on a federal level closes those loopholes.

The bill has already been approved by the House of Representatives and now goes to the president for his approval.
