Oswego (WSYR-TV) -- A local Soldier killed in a non-combat related incident last week in Afghanistan made his final trip home Tuesday night.
23-year-old Kyle Rookey, of Oswego, was a son, a husband, and a new father. Last week, he was killed by a gunshot in Afghanistan – an incident that is still being investigated.
On Tuesday night, the people whose lives he touched gathered to share his memory as he began the journey to his final resting place.
Streets were lined with veterans, neighbors and even strangers, as well as flags, as the community paid tribute to their fallen Soldier. Rookey was a decorated soldier, who chose to serve his country, instead of going to college.
“I’m just proud of our community that we can come out here and showed our pride in him, and we should be,” said Pat Thompson who was there to show her support.
That pride was even stronger on Tuesday, as the entire country paused to reflect on 9/11.
"If he was here, I'd like to tell him thank you for serving our country. He was a fine young man. I’m sure his family is proud of him; all of Oswego is proud of him tonight,” said Rebecca Schermerhorn.
Rookey leaves behind a wife and 11-month-old baby.
