Bridgeport teenager dies in scuba-diving accident at Skaneateles Lake
Auburn (WSYR-TV) – A Bridgeport teen is dead after a scuba diving incident in Skaneateles Lake on Sunday.
According to the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office, 16-year-old Brandon Finch was scuba diving with 33-year-old Carl Hoyt of Bridgeport and 23-year-old Theodore Garlock of Syracuse when the incident occurred on Sunday around 11 a.m.
The two men told Sheriff’s Investigators that Finch began rapidly swimming toward the surface from underneath 60 feet of water and became unresponsive before reaching the surface.
Finch had been certified to swim at that depth a few months ago.
The two older, more experienced divers tried to perform CPR and contacted emergency dispatchers.
Finch was declared dead at Cortland Memorial Hospital.
Investigators do not know why he tried to surface so quickly.
An autopsy is being performed by the Broome County Medical Examiner’s Office.
