Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - A Brooklyn couple was caught in Syracuse after allegedly stealing thousands from immigrant families and fleeing the city.
63-year-old Patrick Panettieri and his wife, 59-year-old Joanne Panettieri, were arrested after they allegedly defrauded approximately 100 Asian immigrant families out of nearly $25,000 they paid in tuition at schools run by the couple to learn English as a Second Language.
The couple is accused of suddenly closing down the schools and fleeing with their victims’ money.
The Panettieri’s were arrested in Syracuse on Friday, August 30 and charged with:
- Scheme to Defraud in the First Degree
- Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree
- Petit Larceny
They were arraigned on August 30 in Brooklyn Criminal Court, and bail was set for $150,000 each.
If convicted, they each face up to four years in prison.
