SYRACUSE, NY (WSYR-TV) - After a potential shortage of bicycles threatened one of the biggest holiday donation drives in the area, the CNY Bike Giveaway was a success on Saturday.
About 2,300 bicycles were given away.
Three weeks ago, only 500 bikes had been donated to the cause. That was only about half of what is usually donated by end of November.
"This year the Central New York community really stepped up. They were watching the news and they came through in the 11th hour with a lot of bicycles,” said founder Jan Maloff.
Maloff said a good mix of large and small bicycles were donated.
Organizers encouraged family members young and old to grab a bike if need be, giving them something active to do together.
