MANLIUS, NY (WSYR-TV) - With the unrest in Cairo, Dr. Ayman Iskander and his wife have cancelled a planned trip to the country, as concern grows for their family.

"They are sort of trapped inside their house. There is a lot of chaos going on outside," said Iskander.

Dr. Iskander has tried to keep in touch with family on a daily basis.

"They said it's not safe and almost were tearful. They're definitely scared and they have a lot of insecurity," said Iskander.

As a cardiologist, Dr. Iskander moved to Central New York six years ago, after spending most of his life growing up outside of Cairo, where he says people have struggled to survive.

"They have all sorts and all means to become a very successful country and despite this, because of a regime and a system that is not working right, it just deteriorated. And that's the unfairness, I think these people deserve way much better than they have now," said Iskander.

While he disagrees with the violence, he supports the efforts of the protestors.

"I would definitely be in the streets with people over there with no doubts. This is something we have been longing for and finally we're seeing it for the first time," said Iskander.

Four Syracuse University study abroad students are in Cairo. The SU Study Abroad Director says they are safe and have been in touch on a daily basis. He says they're trying to get the on a plane as soon as possible, as American are expected to be evacuated starting Monday.
