Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- A group of Central New York agencies that serve the poor and disabled is calling on Washington to repeal the automatic spending cuts known as sequestration.

More than 15 community-based groups say the cuts will hurt the most vulnerable residents. Central New York Citizens in Action says the sequester will impact cities that rely on Federal housing and education assistance the hardest.

“It’s contrary to the whole values of the American Society to write off, to discard millions of people who are poor, aging and disabled. We are also sacrificing our children’s future. These cuts will make it more difficult for young people to lead successful lives,” said John Furman with Central NY Citizens in Action.

The group says Congress should consider closing tax loopholes for the rich, instead of sequester cuts.
