LaFayette (WSYR-TV) – A Central New York man who has grown the heaviest pumpkin in the state so far this year will be honored in Las Vegas for his green thumb.

Lafayette giant pumpkin grower Gary Adams will be honored next March for growing three pumpkins collectively weighing more than 4000 pounds.

On Saturday, Adams traveled to the Great Pumpkin Farm in Clarence, NY, and won first place with a pumpkin weighing 1613.5 pounds. That's his largest yet. Another one of his pumpkins -- weighing 1423 pounds -- held the top spot until this weekend.

His wife, Kathy Adams, took fourth place in Clarence with a pumpkin weighing 1303 pounds.

On Sunday, Adams presented a pumpkin weighing 1242.9 pounds at "Pumpkinville" in Little Valley, NY.

Cooperstown (WSYR-TV) – Gary Adams – again – has the biggest pumpkin in New York so far this year.  His 1423 pound giant pumpkin takes the top spot from another of his pumpkins, which weighed in at 1379 pounds earlier this month.

Adams won three titles Saturday in Cooperstown.  The farmer from LaFayette not only won for his giant pumpkin, but also for having the longest gourd at 113 inches and the largest field pumpkin at 97 pound.  Those are all the biggest in the state so far.

Adam’s wife Kathy Adams also took home a prestigious prize.  Her bright orange pumpkin won the Howard Dill award for prettiest pumpkin.

The pair will head to Clarence Center next weekend to weigh one of their biggest pumpkins.

The Adams family hopes to break the New York state record for biggest pumpkin, which is more than 1600 pounds.  They will come close.  Their largest pumpkin is estimated at 1450 pounds and still growing.

State's largest pumpkin grown in CNY

LaFayette (WSYR-TV) -- Gary and Kathy Adams of LaFayette have only been growing giant pumpkins for about two years now, but they sure seem to have gotten the hang of it. One of their pumpkins has tipped the scales, weighing in as the largest in New York State this year and coming in as the second largest in the world – and they say that’s not even the largest pumpkin in their patch.

The Adams’ say one of their pumpkins this year may be in reach of the State record of 1,600 pounds.

“For at least a week, this one here was growing 40 pounds a day,” Gary Adams said. “One day it’s the size of a grape fruit, the next day it’s the size of a basketball and the next day it’s the size of a beach ball.”

The Adams family says they’ll be taking some of their bigger pumpkins to a weigh-off in Cooperstown this weekend.
