Dryden (WSYR-TV) -- A 25-year-old registered nurse from a small town in Central New York has found herself in the national spotlight. She’s now one of the remaining 18 contestants on ABC’s hit reality show The Bachelor.

Jamie Otis has made it past the first round in a competition for bachelor Ben’s heart. In fact, during a tense rose ceremony, Jamie was chosen first.

Jamie’s nursing teacher at Tompkins Cortland Community College watched at home and said her phone was ringing off the hook.

Chair of the Nursing Department at TCCC Kimberly Sharpe said Jamie is “always positive” “always friendly” and “always prepared.”

After graduating from Dryden High School, Jamie joined the nursing program, but earning her degree wasn’t easy.

According to Sharpe, Jamie had taken custody of her siblings while she attended school.

Now she’s on to the next journey in her life.

Jamie’s friends and family here in Central New York are cheering her along, all the way to the finale.

The Bachelor is already done filming, so you’ll have to watch to find out if Jamie and Ben are meant to be.

The Bachelor airs every Monday night at 8 p.m. on NewsChannel 9.
