Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – At least one Central New York ski destination will soon be open.
Greek Peak has been making snow all week and is set to welcome skiers and snowboarders this weekend.
After one of the worst seasons in memory, staff members at the slopes say they can’t wait for the season to start.
Although they say it’s hard to predict what the season will hold, it won’t take much to be better than last season.
"We are looking forward to it. It is always tough to predict. The fact we're having snow flurries today and we got the opportunity to get out there and make snow this week so we can open on Saturday, we're excited about that,” said Greek Peak Vice President of Operations Wes Kryger.
The new tubing center is also ready to go for this first weekend, which they weren't able to open until mid-season last year, but there is plenty of snow down here and they are ready to open the first weekend of December.
“Christmas week is generally when you start to generate revenue. So it is important the sooner you get open and get the word out to the public and able to make snow and more trails you have open, more lifts you have open the more excited the general public is about coming to your facility,” Kryger said.
If all goes as planned, there should be more than enough of a season for all the ski centers in Central New York to recover from last year’s mild winter and poor skiing conditions.
Greek Peak will have three slopes and two lifts open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. over the upcoming weekend.
Labrador, Song, and Toggenburg are all aiming to be open the following weekend.
