Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- House fires become a reality for all too many families. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), house fires have affected hundreds of thousands of homeowners in just the past few years and there are some striking commonalities between what caused many of them.
On Tuesday, the CPSC said that the top cause is cooking equipment, which accounts for as many as 40 percent of house fires.
Home heating and cooling equipment also raised red flags. They are listed as a top causes of fire-related death.
The CPSC says to let the findings serve as a reminder to install smoke alarms on every level of your home and inside each bedroom. Also, be sure that you never leave cooking items unattended and have a professional inspect your heating and cooling equipment every year.
