Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- United Healthcare Workers East hosted an “Evening of Elegance” at the Oncenter in Syracuse Monday in honor of the President and civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr.

More than 400 visitors came were at the gala to honor Martin Luther King and their president on the day of his second inauguration. The cost was waived for devoted volunteers who helped campaign locally for President Obama.

"A lot of people have a lot invested in this president, in this election. They were not able to attend the inaugural in Washington D.C. for schedule or economic reasons, so this gives them a great opportunity to participate,” said Robert Sykes who attended Central New York’s Inaugural Ball.

And for those who couldn't head south to see the President in person, the next best thing was getting a picture right next to him -- with a little photo magic of course.

Connecting to the events in Washington, through a picture and a party many miles away is just fine for those who attended the gala.

The gala ended at midnight. Similar parties were held in Rochester and Buffalo Monday night.
