Oneida Shores (WSYR-TV) - People spending the first week of summer vacation at campgrounds are getting very soggy.
It's rained just about every day. One camper at Oneida Shores says she only got about an hour and a half of beach time.
It takes some ingenuity to camp in the rain: Tarps are strategically placed, ponds avoided, and screen houses become your best friend.
“We just had to move the screen back because our feet were underwater,” says Becky Debo.
To make matters worse, the rain and stagnant water attract plenty of mosquitoes.
“They're pretty bad at night -- only can stay up until 10:00, then we got to go in because it’s just too bad,” Debo says.
84-year old Robert Duger has been camping at least 50 years, so he's seen it all.
“You got to make reservations. You don't know what the weather's going to be … that's the way it is,” says Duger.
The kids enjoy the rainy weather the best; little Shawna Oralls darted straight for the nearest puddle and jumped right in. Luckily, her mom Amy packed about a dozen outfits.
“You can't really stay clean when you're camping – you got to have fun and worry about laundry later,” she says.
Despite the rain and the mosquitoes, a lot of campers are planning to have cookouts Friday.
So far, fishing is going very well.
