Skaneateles (WSYR-TV) - A golden retriever has a lot to live for now after rescue crews pulled her from a burning Skaneateles home Wednesday barely breathing. She was resuscitated with a special device.
14 year old Lyla still isn't feeling 100% after the ordeal. Considering that she nearly died, however, her owner Terry Battisto doesn't mind if she needs a little TLC. "We thought we might lose her a couple times before because she has health problems so to think she survived a fire it's amazing her vet says she is an amazing dog."
The fire started in the kitchen of the home, just a few feet from where firefighters found Lyla. From there, they brought her out of the house and onto the porch where they resuscitated her with a special device, called a canine resuscitation package.
The canine resuscitation package has a special fit designed for a dog's snout. It helps rescuers to deliver more oxygen to the dog than just mouth-to-nose.
The fire department got the device as a donation a year ago. Not many other departments have one and Firefighter Tammy Duden, who helped to save Lyla, says that having it made all the difference. "It's in the cabinet and it's there and everybody seemed to yell yesterday that we had to bag and to go and get the bag when they knew we had a dog in trouble."
"I'm just happy that she is here still," said Battisto.
