Cayuga County (WSYR-TV) -- Cayuga County joined many other CNY counties who have passed local laws banning the sale and possession of synthetic drugs Monday night.

The county legislature unanimously passed the law making it illegal to sell or possess the drugs.

If you’re caught, you’re looking at a year in jail and a hefty fine.

The new law will take effect immediately.

Several other counties in Central New York have passed similar laws, including Madison, Oswego and Onondaga County.

The State banned the sale of the synthetic drugs earlier this year.
